I’ve always had some inconsistent issues with my sciatic nerve, only on my right side.  For those 60% of people who will never get sciatic nerve pain, consider yourself lucky.  This nerve is the longest and widest single nerve in the human body and runs from the top of the leg to the foot.  It runs anterior through a muscle called the piriformis which is in your buttocks.   This is usually where it gets caught for me, giving me all hell.  It happens when I wear high heels for a prolonged period of time, wear shoes without arch support, or perform exercises with repetitive hip flexion such as kickboxing.
I’ve had an easy pregnancy and have little complaints up until this point.  No nausea, no weird cravings or aversions, and no cramping or bleeding.  I unfortunately have my sciatic Here are a few other treatments for this pain:nerve coming back literally to bite me in the ass.  It’s annoying and it almost makes me walk with a limp when it’s severe.  When I feel it coming on, I go to my usual remedies of massage, which my husband will gladly help with, and foam rolling.

Otherwise, here are a few quick pain relief ideas:

  1. Over the counter pain relievers or prescription pain relievers if it’s severe (with your doctors recommendation of course)
  2. Topical analgesic
  3. Massage
  4. Piriformis and low back stretches – watch above video clip
  5. Use of a foam roller – watch above video clip
  6. Acupuncture
  7. Biofeedback
  8. Changing your sleep position to the fetal position with a pillow between your legs
  9. Perform nerve glides – google this
