The TRX or the suspension trainer is a pair of reinforced straps anchored somewhere with handgrips at the end that allow you to do a ton of exercises that work the whole body. It is marketed as being easily portable because it’s lightweight and collapsible. It can be taken anywhere, on business trips hooked up to a hotel door, or to the park hooked up to a tree. You may start to see these in gyms, especially in classes, but don’t be scared of trying it.
Most TRX exercises require good core control and good functional strength, but there are still exercises that the beginner, elderly, overweight exercise can still do. I purchased the TRX last year and use it on many of my clients. I use it quite a bit for clients that need help with or are new to squats or lunges. Most of my female clients come to me because they want to lose weight. The best way to lose weight quickly is going to be to train multiple muscle groups at the same time while working in various planes. This is called functional training and it is becoming more and more popular. The best part of functional training on the TRX is that you can strengthen all of your muscles together in compound movements instead of the typical isolation exercises that focus only on one muscle group.
The TRX package goes for about $200. There are cheaper versions out there, but the reviews aren’t as promising. Definitely don’t try making suspension straps on your own because it could be quite dangerous. If you’re serious about improving your health, a TRX is worth it and it can replace your gym membership fee for years to come.
